What is CPR?

CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It is typically performed as a combination of chest compressions and breaths. You are essentially doing for the victim what their body can no longer do for themselves.

CPR does not  restart the heart of someone who is in cardiac arrest. That is the role of an automated external defibrillator (AED). What CPR does do, however, is buy the victim of cardiac arrest time until an AED is ready to be used.

CPR must be performed on a hard, flat service. By pressing down on the breastbone the heart is squeezed, circulating blood throughout the body. In traditional CPR, a combination of compressions and ventilations (known as “rescue breaths”) provides the entire body — but especially the vital organs, such as the brain, the heart and the lungs — with oxygenated (or oxygen-rich) blood.

Learning how to recognize an emergency, how to activate the EMS (emergency medical services) system by calling 911, how to perform CPR and how to operate an AED are all critical to saving lives. As you never know when or if you’ll need to use those skills, there’s no better time than the present to learn them. The more people  who get CPR/AED training and  certification, the more likely there will be

a qualified rescuer present when you need one.

What is AED?

Bloodborne Pathogens

This class teaches you how diseases are spread and what you need to know and do to protect yourself against disease transmission. This class meets OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens for anyone with potential for contacting blood and other potentially infectious materials while at work.

Bloodborne Pathogen certifications are valid for one year as per the OSHA standard.

Emergency defibrillation and CPR should be done as soon as possible. Without immediate medical attention, death occurs within a few minutes. For each minute that passes while waiting for the use of an AED the victim’s chance of survival goes down 10% per minute.

The average national response time for “Emergency Rescue” is 7 to 9 minutes in an metropolitan area. If 9-1-1 rescuers arrive at the location in 5 minutes, by the time they get their equipment, get in your building, get to the victim, and analyze the situation it will be several more minutes before the first Life Saving Shock is delivered.

According to the American Heart Association, sudden cardiac arrest strikes 420,000 people out of the hospital every year in the Unites States, 60% of all SCAs are witnessed however less than 10% survive.
